The Citadel Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is the organization of currently enrolled LGBTQ Citadel cadets and their straight allies, and provides an opportunity to share experiences and support with other cadets.
The first meeting of The Citadel GSA took place on campus in Winter 2012. If you would like more information or would like to be included in future events, please fill out the contact form at right and indicate you’d like to be a member.
Many LGBTQ cadets before you have walked in your shoes. Fortunately, in the post “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era, you no longer have to worry about potentially losing your scholarship, commission contract, or even your place at The Citadel simply for being yourself. But we know that doesn’t necessarily make life easier – whether in the battalion, “coming out,” or even just coming to terms with who you are and accepting yourself.
Fortunately, there are resources available to you.
Membership in the Citadel GSA & GALA. We have an active discussion forum. Inside, you’ll see we have a number of LGBT alumni and current cadets who are more than happy to talk, hear your experiences and share their own. We’ve all BTDT and are more than happy to help whenever possible.
The Citadel Counseling Center is available to cadets on campus by appointment, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
If you are thinking about self-harm (or know someone who is) please talk to someone without delay.

– Remember: Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Don’t just take our word for it, it does get better.
A big part of The Citadel Gay and Lesbian Alliance’s mission is to connect and reconnect grads who may have dissociated themselves from The Citadel and The Citadel Alumni Association after graduation because of their sexuality or gender identity.
Be assured there is a place for everyone at our table.
Even if you not ready to reconnect as an active member, please join us by filling in the form at left and becoming a part of our communications. We think you’ll be surprised to learn how many of us there are.
Each of us would not be where we are today without the support of straight friends, family and faculty / staff along the way. If you have been there for one of us before, thank you. It is a tremendous testimony to your character that you advocate completely outside of your own self-interest.
And if you would like to continue helping to support our mission of a more inclusive and just environment for Citadel cadets, alumni and faculty – please join us.
Your support is tremendously valuable and deeply appreciated.
(Note: If you are already connected with us on Facebook no need for you to sign up again!)
